Existing pedestrian areas
Cambridge City centre has a number of streets which are completely
pedestrianised, and others that are pedestrianised during certain times of the
day. In addition, the City Centre Core Scheme has closed several streets around
the pedestrianised area to through traffic
The Pedestrianisation option
This option would aim to extend the central area traffic restrictions and
provide greater pedestrian priority. The option would also aim to improve
pedestrian links both from, and between, the outer areas.
It will also consider the introduction of
home-zones in
residential areas. These are areas where pedestrians would have priority over
other vehicles. In some cases these streets would be for access only. Street
space previously used by traffic could be utilised for recreation and social
purposes. This option would need to consider the various safety and social
issues, as well as the effects of displaced traffic.
